The winners of the Golden Blasters 2013 were announced at the closing ceremony of Octocon 2013, The Irish National Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention, in the Camden Court Hotel.
This year's winner of the 2013 Golden Blaster award for script writing was awarded to Eoin O'Sullivan for his work "An Bean Sidhe".
The audience award, which is voted on by all the people who are in the audience of the showing, The Silver Blaster, was SLEEPWORKING written and directed by Gavin Williams.
And so we have reached the end of our trip across the globe for the best of this year's Blasters and although the last, these two films are by no means the least. We come to the United Kingdom, and two films that question reality, and go from an investigation into the failure of the first manned mission to Mars, to a near-future where a development in technology has led to a disturbing use.
Director: Paul Vernon
Well we've just gone by the half way point and so far we've seen entries from Ireland, Singapore, Australia and The United States. Where next will the Blasters take us? Well, it's back to Australia and then onto France with our next two films.
THE TALE OF THE CURIOUS AND CONFUSED MONSTER
Writer/Director: Jim and Nick Zoumis
Today, we take you to and from the near future in two very different ways, with unexpected, or perhaps expected, consequences.
Writer/Director: Allan Menzies
The agent simply known as 94 has been sent from the near future to the Year 1994, to prevent the assassination of a doctor whose potential existence is vital to the future, but does 94 know the true nature of his mission?
And so, onto our next two nominees: one from Australia, the other from The United States, both dealing with the terrifying consequences of encountering the unknown, be it the supernatural or the unexpected after-effects of time travel.
Writer/Director: Jane Eakin
And so, the time has come where we once again select some of the finest short films for your enjoyment and consideration. This year was perhaps the most difficult of all for the selection panel, with the quality of entries the highest we have ever seen. From as close as Ireland to as far away as Singapore, from the United States to France, from Scotland to Australia, they cover all aspects of genre, from hauntings to time travel, from misunderstood monsters to missions to Mars.
Well, it's done. The arguments have been made, and the entries watched. The short list for this year's Blasters has been decided. Stay tuned to this website as we'll be announcing each entry with a quick synopsis and some of the reasons for it's selection.
Although I have to admit: this year, the Judges were much more decisive in their selection.
See? No arguments! Decision made!
Hello Octonauts! Or whatever it is you're called. People? Anyway.
First, thanks so much to everyone who came out on Friday evening for our Pub Quiz. We filled up the venue, and we only barely squeezed everyone in. Such a great turnout! You really helped us get in the spirit for Octocon! We might do another event after the con if we can manage it. :) A few photos are up on the Facebook Page.
Hi everybody! In case you have heard, Octocon is having a pub quiz on Friday to raise funds and show you all a good time! It will be €5 per person, and we'll form teams on the night. So come along to The Black Sheep on Capel Street in Dublin on Friday July 26th, and have fun! Doors are at 7:30pm.
Check out zee posters on our Tumblr here and here!
We are now 80-ish days away from Octocon, and so we embark on the search for more participants to take part in our excellent program.
While there is something exciting about hearing the people that we are fans of talking about things, there are occasions when you wish that you could be up there and have your views heard.
New guest announcement time! Ruth Frances Long (aka R.F. Long) and Derek Gunn will be joining us this October for Octocon 2013 in the Camden Court Hotel! Heck yes!
Ruth may be best known right now for The Treachery of Beautiful things, which comes out in paperback next month. She writes some really beautiful stories, and is also a librarian which makes her awesome.
Derek is known for his Vampire Apocalypse series, and more recently his HMS Swift Adventures series. Both are very different kinds of horror, with the latter being historical naval horror, which is a tad unusual in a good way! :)
More guests being announced soon!
Hello everybody! We hope this finds you well, and if it doesn't, we hope it makes you well!
We thought we should tell you that we've published two guest bios today! One is of the Galway-based writer of amazing comics and short stories and many other things, Maura McHugh, of Jennifer Wilde and Róisín Dubh fame, while the other is that of Michael Carroll, whose bio could be a mile long if we listed everything he's been doing lately, but he's probably best known for his comic-work and novels, such as Judge Dredd and Stronger, respectively!
That's all for today, but many more announcements are to come very soon!

This morning we launched the new version of the Octocon website. This new version would allow people to purchase a membership for the 2013 event.
However, we started getting reports that people were having issues with purchasing a membership.
Once we got those reports, we quickly started to investigate the matter. It turns out that there were two unrelated errors that occurred in our website launch.
The first error, which occurred on all browsers, has been resolved completely, and payments should now be completed using our PayPal payment option.
So we have launched our new website, and it is looking great.
Part of our website launch is that we can now accept memberships online.
Octocon have added our code of conduct to our website. All people who are members of the convention should be aware of thier rights and responsibilities under the code of conduct.
Hello all, We are pleased to confirm that Octocon will accept memberships via EFT.
This joins our current payment options of Paypal and Cheque.
You can also Join Octocon by Cash if you find us at an upcoming event that we will be present at, keep on eye on the news here for confirmation of these events.
